art in general

“Constructing a system of scientific judgements about a particular art (in the present case, verbal art) independently of questions concerned with the essence of art in general - such is also the tendency of contemporary works on poetics. (The Problem of Content, Material and Form in Verbal Art", 1924).
This is Bakhtin’s critic of the Russian formalist approach to art and possibly also formulates a good explanation why a traditional discourse analysis is more insufficient than other approaches as a means of coming as close as possible to understanding aesthetic utterances.

do you think fully understanding of aesthetic utterances is possible?

no I don't ;) but I think it impossible to get closer by respecting the specifically aesthetic and it's ungraspability!
